Science Teacher vs. Nurse

It's nature vs. nurture for me at this point.

I've come down to two realistic conclusions on what I want to do with my life. It took me three semesters to figure it out, which I consider to be very lucky.

What do you think of these professions? Which one would you prefer more than the other and why? What are some setbacks you feel that these jobs have? I'd love all of your opinions.

  1. Being a teacher is hard work! Be prepared for long hours past the point when school is over. Depending on what grade you actually want to teach, the more time you'll have to invest in researching assignments for your students etc. My MIL was a 2nd grade teacher for 20 years. She loved it, but she worked her bootay off for many years.

I know virtually nothing about nursing, unforch :-(. I wish I had some advice to give you on that front.

Take stock of what you really want to do, think about it for awhile, then do your research! Talk to anybody and everybody you know, google stories about your chosen professions and then make that choice!

    Good luck. :-)

  2. Unfortunately I don't know you well enough to point you in one direction or the other and I wouldn't choose either of these professions for myself. But I think the simple fact that you've narrowed it down to these two options just demonstrates where your heart is at and your desire to serve people.

Regardless of which path you choose, I think it's clear that the world needs more people like you :)

  3. Wow, both very noble professions. Drawbacks: Teachers have to deal with a lot of aloof kids and annoyances while Nurses have to deal with a lot of physical grossness. Both have long hours. Pros: As a teacher you get to somewhat dictate your day in what you teach so it's self-directed in a way, while nurses get their day dictated to them based on what comes in, but it's never boring.
I don't think you can go wrong either way, but personally, I'd go with Science Teacher because it seems like there's a need for GOOD teachers especially in the sciences and especially one with the imagination and entertainment value you offer.

  4. Well, nursing school is great if you can get into nursing school. There is like a 0% unemployment rate for nurses right now so that gets my vote.

  5. Science teachers often teach kids that don't care and nurses work with people who don't respect them enough. (but Sub-Radar-Mike makes the best point!)

  6. I'm considering nursing, too. The pros to nursing (in my eyes) over a teacher is job security. If you're a nurse, you are guaranteed a job in any city, and you can take time off and control your career through specialties. If you're a teacher, you will continuously be dealing with the struggles of low pay, lay-offs, and strict hours. A recent estimation said there is going to be a HUGE nursing shortage in the next 10 years. If you want to have a steady job, go with nursing. If you think you'll LOVE teaching with your whole LIFE AND SOUL, then maybe be a teacher.
    That's my two cents. ;)
