Saving the Gorillas

While I was in my Anthropology class yesterday, I was unaware on how endangered some of our primates really are. Now I am not going to say I am one of those people are that overly sensitive about animals (although there is nothing wrong with that). I am just not. I eat meat, but I still have a heart.

I can't help but feel depressed when I think about how only about 700 of our African Mountain Gorillas are living, and on there very way to becoming extinct. Gorillas are critically endangered and I had no idea. My teacher says by 2015 they may just be gone. This disturbs me. We are talking about Gorillas here. Donkey Kong and King Kong!

However, the big bad beast we all know is not so much the case.

Gorillas are a very incredible species. A lot like our own, they are very maternal and protective of their families. And a lot like our own, they do not attack unless they feel threatened or if you approach their children. In fact, when Gorillas fight eachother, it is more of an embarassing slap boxing match rather than a fight to the death like other wild animals. Gorillas are herbivorous, meaning they do not eat meat. They depend on plants such as fruit, bulbs, plants and the occasionally tree bark for their diet.

It makes me sick that people would want to poach these big guys just to sell their hands. I can't even begin to comprehend or understand it, and I don't want to. These are enormous and intelligent creatures who mind their own business. I wish some humans would just do the same and leave them alone!

Check out some of these sites, you might just fall in love. :o)

  1. This is so heartbreaking. It's sometimes just shocking what humans will do to animals just to make a buck. Thanks for bringing attention to such an urgent issue!
